The Graduate Immigration Route (formerly known as the Post-Study Work visa) allows international students who have successfully completed a degree at a UK university to remain in the UK and work — or look for work — for a period of two years (or three years for doctoral graduates).

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, you must have completed a course at an approved UK Higher Education Institution, held a Student visa at the time of graduation, and be applying from within the UK. The route is unsponsored, meaning you do not need a job offer before applying.

EligibilityUK degree holders (Student visa holders)
Duration2 years (3 years for PhD graduates)
Job Offer RequiredNo
Minimum SalaryNone
Work TypeAny — including self-employment
ExtendableNo (switch to another route instead)

When Should You Apply?

You must apply before your current Student visa expires. The most common approach is to apply shortly before or immediately after completing your final exams, ensuring continuity of lawful residence in the UK. Timing is critical — missing the window means you may need to leave the UK and re-apply from abroad.

"The Graduate Route is one of the most accessible visa pathways in the UK system — but students must act promptly. Do not wait until the last moment to prepare your application."

What Can You Do on the Graduate Route?

  • Work in any job, at any salary level
  • Work for multiple employers simultaneously
  • Be self-employed or freelance
  • Look for work without any specific restrictions
  • Switch to a Skilled Worker or other visa route if sponsored

What You Cannot Do

  • Extend this visa — it is a one-time, non-extendable route
  • Access public funds
  • Work as a professional sportsperson or coach

Planning Your Next Steps

The Graduate Route provides a valuable window of opportunity to find sponsored employment or build a career in the UK. If you wish to remain in the UK beyond the graduate period, you will need to switch to a qualifying visa route such as the Skilled Worker visa before your Graduate visa expires.
